Planning a Surprise Visit Home: Lessons From My Trip
Updated September 2026: in 2020 I wrote about driving home to surprise my family before a long vacation, after my manager approved two days of work from home. I pretended to be busy at work while they worried about my safety during the pandemic. I have rewritten it as a set of lessons on planning a surprise visit.
I was excited to go home for a long vacation. My manager had approved two days of working from home before it, and I had little work left that week. I kept the trip a secret and pretended to my mother and wife that I was busy at work as usual. They were worried about my safety during the pandemic and wanted me home as soon as possible, and they did not yet know that working from home was becoming common in technology jobs. I drove home, and when I arrived they could not believe I was there so early.
Is a surprise visit a good idea?
Usually, yes. It can be a lovely moment. The risk is in the lead-up: if you pretend to be busy or distant, family members may worry, as mine did. Keep the cover story light and do not ignore calls.
How do you plan a surprise without causing worry?
- Tell one person in the household, so someone can make sure everyone is home.
- Stay in normal contact, without being short or rude.
- Check the family's plans, so you do not arrive to an empty house.
- Consider health rules or concerns, especially when older relatives are at home.
How do you plan a long drive home?
Check the car the day before, including tyres, fluids and spare. Plan stops every two hours or so, avoid driving when tired and share your route with someone you trust. Start early to avoid arriving late at night.
Can you work from home on the way?
Only if the work is light and you can stop safely. Tell your manager where you will be and when you are reachable. Never take calls while driving.
What made the visit special?
Seeing my family's surprise when I walked in. Whatever the plan, that moment is what matters, so keep everything else simple.
